Every once in a while, I find myself joking to avoid having to put effort into a conversation. Now having lived for an extremely long 18 years, I am definitely the most qualified to give the goodest guide to types of humor (provided there are no comedians or literature majors nearby). Anyway, here we go!
Most of the comedy I am familiar with is observational, because it’s quick and easy to do decently. Personally, I split these into several sub-categories:
It's Funny Because It's Relatable
Often, pointing out a shared experience, especially ones that go unnoticed, can be funny. Finding a bit of irony in how we can’t fall asleep easily, but also want to get out of bed is a common example.
Finding some amusement in the everyday is a fairly common way to craft a joke. The way we aren’t used to the normal lights being on in the classroom, or rushing the conclusion of an in class essay, as long as it is said in an interesting way, can be pretty funny. Similes and metaphors come in handy, especially if they’re unconventional. This brings me to my next section:
It’s Funny Because It’s Weird
This is ore of a personal favorite of mine, but I think that when things are weird, they are funny, especially with descriptions. This is more prevalent in modern online meme culture, which can be pretty surreal sometimes. For example:
And that one’s just from around 2019.
Anyway, moving on
It’s Funny Because It’s True
Here, we move more into satire, but still utilizing observational comedy. Even in The Importance of Being Earnest, when the rich people say that they value style, it was funny at the time because it was true, but stated so bluntly. A blunt stating of the facts could create amusement on its own. Just this morning I was talking about The Stranger, which we all definitely read over the weekend, and simply going over how matter-of-factly Meursault covers things was funny. Sure, its not funny that Raymond beats women, but Meursault's lack of reaction, in a vacuum, is quite funny. The indifference with which he treats the world and its craziness is funny, in a sense.
Overall, There is more I could talk about, like sarcasm or more random stuff, but I don't feel like it (and it's getting long).
So, uh, bye.
